About Treatments
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Intensively trained by Charles Swenson, MD and Kathryn Butts, LCSW
DBT was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to help individuals who struggled with chronic emotion dysregulation. Initially, this treatment was developed for individuals with chronic suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and borderline personality disorder. The treatment has expanded, and research has shown it to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions including depression, trauma, substance use, and more. Dialectics means two seemingly opposing things can both be true and valid at the same time. The main dialectic in DBT is acceptance and change. This is the idea that we can validate and accept where we are in this moment and also continue to grow and improve. DBT focuses on teaching skills based off this dialectic with four modules: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Distress Tolerance. I work as an individual practitioner teaching clients DBT skills and implement DBT methods in my work with clients.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
Received training from the Beck Institute
CBT was developed by Dr. Aaron Beck and Dr. Judith Beck. The treatment is based on the understanding that our thoughts and perceptions of a situation significantly impact how we feel and behave. Often when we are distressed, our thoughts become more distorted and unhelpful. CBT helps individuals identify those thoughts, check how accurate the thoughts are, and challenge those distorted thoughts to develop more balanced ones. This can help us change how we feel and act in a way that is more helpful to us.
Cognitive Processing Therapy
Trauma Treatment
CPT is one of the leading treatments to treat individuals with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions. It is a CBT-based treatment developed by Dr. Patricia Resick, Dr. Kathleen Chard, and Dr. Candice Monson. Trauma-related conditions can result when an individual has experienced or witnessed intensely distressing situations, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, war combat, assaults, natural disasters, and accidents. CPT provides psychoeducation on how trauma can impact one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to keep one "stuck" in distress. CPT helps individuals change their thinking that has been affected by the trauma to help them feel better and reduce severity of symptoms.
